The low murmur of conversations and the occasional chime of silver against porcelain formed a soothing melody, but none of it reached him. His thoughts were singularly occupied by the woman who had, of late, taken unexpected residence in his mind.

Samantha.

A name he had spoken only a handful of times, yet it felt inexplicably familiar, as though it had always belonged upon his lips, waiting to be uttered. The memory of their last conversation lingered in his mind—her eyes, vast with sorrow yet carrying the ember of a fire unextinguished, her voice laced with the weight of unshed tears yet refusing to falter. There was something about her—something raw and unresolved, a woman both burdened and defiant. He admired that contradiction more than he cared to admit.

He exhaled slowly, glancing toward the entrance. She had hesitated when he had asked her to dinner, and for a moment, he had been certain she would refuse. He had seen the conflict in her gaze, the internal war between the past she carried and the possibility of something new. And yet, she had agreed. Was it curiosity that had compelled her? Or had she simply wished to escape, if only for an evening, the heavy weight of her own solitude?

The door opened with a soft chime, and there she stood.

Samantha.

She had not dressed for extravagance, nor had she adorned herself with the embellishments that society often dictated for such an evening. Yet she was captivating in her simplicity. The muted glow of the restaurant’s chandeliers cast a golden hue upon her skin, and though there was exhaustion in the set of her shoulders, there was also quiet resilience.

Akib rose instinctively, an action born of reverence rather than mere courtesy.

“You came,” he murmured, a small, unreadable smile gracing his lips.

Samantha’s fingers toyed with the strap of her bag as she inhaled deeply, as though steadying herself. “I almost didn’t,” she admitted, her voice softer than he had ever heard it before. “But I told myself that if I keep refusing moments like these, I will spend a lifetime only knowing what it means to grieve.”

A flicker of something unreadable passed through Akib’s expression—an understanding too profound to be spoken aloud. He gestured toward the seat across from him. “Then I am grateful that tonight, grief does not claim you.”

She sat, her hands clasped together on the table, as though grounding herself to the present. For a moment, silence stretched between them, not uncomfortable but weighted with unspoken thoughts. Then, Akib spoke again, his voice gentle yet firm.

“There is something liberating about stepping into a place where no one knows who you are, where the past does not stretch its hands to tether you. I do not wish to pry, Samantha, nor to ask what you are not yet ready to share. But I would like, if you permit me, to be someone with whom you do not have to carry the past like an iron chain.”

She looked at him then, truly looked, as though searching for deceit and finding none. Her fingers relaxed against the table. “And what if the past refuses to let me go?”

Akib leaned forward slightly, his eyes locked onto hers. “Then we will remind it that the future has just as much claim upon you.”

A faint, almost imperceptible smile ghosted across her lips—a momentary surrender to hope, however fragile. And in that instant, something shifted. Not the past, not the present, but perhaps the possibility of tomorrow.

As the waiter arrived, taking their order in hushed tones, Akib found himself memorizing every detail of the evening—the way she folded her hands when she listened, the way the candlelight danced in her eyes.

A beginning, he thought.

No more, no less. But a beginning, nonetheless.

The restaurant, dimly lit with golden hues, cast a warm glow upon the two figures seated across from one another. The world outside bustled with the restless motion of the city, but within these walls, time slowed, cradling their conversation in an intimate stillness.

Akib studied Samantha with quiet admiration, noting the way her fingers traced absent patterns on the polished wood of the table, her mind seemingly lost in thought. But as she lifted her gaze to meet his, there was a certain light in her eyes—curiosity, expectation, something unspoken yet deeply felt.

“You have always struck me as someone with great ambition,” she said at last, her voice carrying both softness and intent. “Tell me, Akib, what is it that you desire most for your future?”

Akib exhaled lightly, his fingers wrapping around the stem of his glass as he contemplated his words. “Desire,” he murmured, as though tasting the weight of it. “I wish for a life that is mine to build—a future shaped not by necessity, but by choice. To create, to innovate, to leave behind something of meaning. And you, Samantha? What is it that your heart seeks?”

She smiled faintly, her fingers brushing against the rim of her glass. “To be free,” she admitted. “To be rid of the shadows of my past and step into something bright, something… genuine.” She hesitated before adding, “Perhaps even to be loved in a way that does not feel like an obligation, but a choice freely made.”

A silence followed, thick with unsaid things. Then, as though suddenly struck by a thought, Samantha tilted her head, her expression shifting into something more mischievous.

“Tell me,” she said, her tone light, though her heart inexplicably raced, “do you have someone in your life? Someone who waits for you? Who claims your thoughts even now?”

There was a flicker of something unreadable in Akib’s eyes before he answered. “Yes,” he said smoothly, with an ease that seemed almost practiced. “There is someone.”

Samantha stilled. The words landed heavier than she had expected, though she knew not why. “Oh?” she said, keeping her tone carefully neutral. “And who is this fortunate woman?”

Akib smirked slightly, reaching into his phone and scrolling for a moment before turning the screen toward her. A photo of a striking woman appeared, her features unfamiliar yet undeniably lovely.

Samantha barely glanced at it before scoffing. “She is not your type.”

Akib raised a brow, amused. “And what, pray, is my type?”

Samantha crossed her arms, feigning indifference. “Someone who understands the depth of your mind, who sees beyond the surface, who does not merely pose prettily for pictures.”

Akib chuckled, leaning slightly forward. “Ah, but love is not so calculated, is it? If I feel something for her, is that not enough?”

Samantha narrowed her eyes, feeling an unfamiliar sting within her chest. “And do you?” she asked, almost challengingly. “Do you truly love her?”

Akib observed her, a knowing look settling upon his face. He saw the way her hands clenched slightly, the way she refused to meet his gaze for too long. “I told you, I am with her. And so, I shall continue to be.”

Something inside Samantha twisted. “Even if she is wrong for you?”

Akib tapped a thoughtful finger against the table. “And why, may I ask, does it concern you so much?”

Samantha opened her mouth, then shut it. Her pulse thundered against her skin. It was only then that she realized the truth—she was jealous. A laugh escaped Akib, quiet yet triumphant.

“Samantha,” he said, his voice tinged with something softer, more intimate. “You are jealous.”

She swallowed, the weight of realization pressing down upon her. “I—”

“Why does it unsettle you so?” he asked, his eyes dark with something unreadable. “Why does the thought of my affections belonging elsewhere trouble you?”

Samantha could not answer, for the truth was written plainly in her silence. She had begun to care. To long. To feel.

Akib reached across the table then, his fingers brushing against hers, just the lightest of touches, yet it sent a current through her veins. “Perhaps,” he said quietly, “you already know the answer.”

She did. And in that moment, she could no longer deny it.

Akib leaned back, watching her with a contemplative gaze before breaking the tension with a casual question. “Now tell me, what would you like to eat?”

Samantha blinked, momentarily thrown by the abrupt shift. She cleared her throat, searching for composure. “I think I’ll have—” she hesitated, then decided, “a classic American cheeseburger.”

Akib’s lips quirked into an amused smile. “A rather simple choice.”

She lifted her chin. “There is beauty in simplicity.”

He nodded approvingly before calling over the waiter. “And for myself, I will have the sweet and sour chicken.” He paused, glancing at Samantha with a playful glint in his eyes. “It happens to be my girlfriend’s favorite dish.”

A sharp, irrational pang shot through Samantha’s chest. “How... thoughtful of you,” she murmured, though the words tasted bitter on her tongue.

Akib feigned ignorance, watching her reaction with concealed amusement. “Yes, she always insists that it is the perfect balance—tangy yet sweet, much like love itself.”

Samantha scoffed, unable to stop herself. “Love is hardly about balance. It is about depth. About knowing someone beyond their preferences in food.”

Akib tilted his head, considering her words. “And yet, the smallest things reveal so much about a person. Preferences, choices… even jealousy.”

Samantha stiffened. “I am not jealous.”

His grin was slow, knowing. “No?”

She forced a breath, gripping her napkin as if it might anchor her. “I just think you deserve better.”

Akib chuckled, his voice dropping lower. “Or perhaps… You simply wish that person were you.”

A flush crept up Samantha’s neck, heat flooding her veins. She opened her mouth to counter him, to deny it, to find some clever retort—but no words came. Because deep down, she knew. And from the way Akib watched her, so did he.

Akib leaned forward slightly, lowering his voice to a whisper. “Tell me, Samantha. If I were to look into your heart right now, would I find my name written there?”

Her breath hitched. For a fleeting moment, she wanted to lie, to scoff, to brush him off as she had done before. But she couldn’t. Not anymore.
