Chapter 7: A Farewell Not Easily Given. Urban Romance Thriller Web Novel "The Ocean Between Us" by Abrar Nayeem Chowdhury. The Best Thriller Novel

The morning was golden, the kind that bathed the world in soft light and made even the weary look radiant. The ship had docked at its final destination, and for the first time since their voyage had begun, the land felt solid beneath their feet.

But the stillness did not ease the weight in Ronaldo’s chest.

He stood on the dock beside Aana, the city stretching beyond them—a place of towering buildings and hurried people, indifferent to the secrets that had unraveled at sea. Here, the world was ordinary. Here, the impossible had no place.

Yet, as he turned to Aana, he knew—they had not left it behind.

Aana folded her gloved hands before her, the wind lifting a loose curl from her shoulder. Her gaze was steady, yet there was something unspoken in her eyes, something fragile beneath the composure.

“It seems we must part ways here, Mr. Ronaldo,” she said with a small smile.

Ronaldo’s jaw tightened. “You say it as though it were a mere formality.”

Aana’s smile deepened, but it was tinged with something wistful. “Is it not?”

“No,” he said simply.

A flicker of something unreadable crossed her face. She exhaled, looking away toward the water, her voice softer now. “The world is not kind to those who carry things they do not understand.”

Ronaldo studied her carefully. “And do we understand it, Aana?”

Her lips parted, but she hesitated. Then, finally, she murmured, “I do not think we ever will.”

A small silence stretched between them before he said, his voice quieter, “Then should we not bear it together?”

Aana’s breath caught, but she recovered quickly, shaking her head with a gentle laugh. “Mr. Ronaldo, you are a man of business, not sentiment. I had not expected such words from you.”

Ronaldo let out a low chuckle, but there was little amusement in it. “Then you have misunderstood me. I am neither one nor the other—I am simply a man who has found something he does not wish to lose.”

Aana met his gaze then, fully, as though committing every feature of his face to memory.

“And yet,” she said softly, “you shall.”

He inhaled slowly. “Why?”

Aana smiled, but it was the kind that did not reach the eyes. “Because not all things are meant to be held onto.”

His jaw clenched. “You would leave me with only that?”

Aana tilted her head, considering. “No.” She took a step closer, close enough that he could see the gold flecks in her deep brown eyes. “I shall leave you with this—”

She placed a gloved hand lightly over his chest, just above his heart.

“Remember, Mr. Ronaldo,” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper, “the sea may keep its secrets, but we are not meant to be among them.”

And with that, she stepped back.

Ronaldo reached for words, but they failed him. And before he could stop her before he could demand something—a promise, a future, anything—

Aana turned.

And she walked away.

The day passed in a haze.

Victor and the others busied themselves with the business affairs they had come for—negotiations, contracts, financial discussions that should have mattered to Ronaldo but did not. He moved through it all, speaking when required, and shaking hands when necessary, but his mind was elsewhere.

Or, rather—with someone else.

Even as they finalized their deals, even as they toasted their so-called success, his thoughts drifted. The world around him was no longer filled with strange knocks and whispered voices, but in his mind, there was one voice he could not silence.

Aana.

Her laughter was light yet edged with mystery. Her speech was as if she were always on the verge of revealing something but never quite did. Her gaze had lingered on him before she left.

Victor nudged him at one point. “You look like a man who has misplaced something valuable.”

Ronaldo gave a short, humorless chuckle. “Perhaps I have.”

Victor smirked. “If it’s the lady, you should have spoken sooner.”

Ronaldo did not reply. What would be the point? Some things are not meant to be held onto.

Yet, when he returned to his room that evening, sat on the edge of his bed, and stared at the quiet, unfamiliar city beyond the window, one thought pressed against his ribs like an unshaken weight.

Aana had been wrong.

Some things should be held onto.

And one day, he would find her again.

Even if it meant following the whispers back to the sea.
