“I have to go,” Samantha said suddenly, pushing back her chair.

Akib frowned. “But you haven’t finished eating.”

“It’s okay,” she murmured, her voice quieter now. “It is enough for me. Thank you.”

She stood, her hands tightening into fists at her sides, willing herself to walk away, to keep her composure. But as she turned, his voice stopped her.

“And my answer?” Akib asked, his tone quieter yet piercing. “Would I find my name in your heart?”

Samantha felt the weight of the moment press upon her. She knew what he was asking, what he wanted her to say. But the words—confounding, terrifying words—stayed lodged in her throat. Instead, she took a breath and met his gaze.

“Some questions have no answer,” she said softly. “You have to understand by yourself.”

She turned and walked away, not daring to look back.

The next morning at precisely eleven o’clock, Samantha sat at her desk in the library at Seol National University, immersed in her work. The scent of old books filled the air, the quiet murmur of students flipping through pages and scribbling notes forming a familiar background hum.

Then she heard it—a voice she knew too well. Her heart betrayed her, skipping a beat before she even turned her head.

There he was.

Akib stood a few tables away, laughing at something his classmate had said. The young woman beside him—Trina, she assumed—leaned in as she spoke, her smile easy and warm. Samantha didn’t know her name, nor did she care to. But the sight of her sitting so close, speaking so comfortably with Akib, sent a sharp pang through her chest.

She rose from her seat, composing herself, and walked toward them with measured steps. Stopping beside their table, she addressed them evenly. “Please keep your voices down. This is a library.”

Trina looked slightly startled but nodded, offering a quick apology. Akib, however, merely arched a brow. Samantha could feel his gaze studying her, his lips curving ever so slightly. That knowing, insufferable smirk.

He glanced around. There were other students engaged in conversation, not loudly, but certainly not silently either. Yet Samantha had chosen to reprimand only them.

Realization dawned on him, and amusement flickered in his eyes. Jealousy.

A slow grin spread across his face as he leaned toward Trina, deliberately resting a hand over hers. “So, Trina, you were telling me about your weekend?”

Samantha clenched her jaw.

“Ah, and your hair—” he said, brushing a lock of Trina’s hair between his fingers, “it’s stunning in this light.”

A sharp, unrelenting ache settled in Samantha’s chest. She felt something hot and unbearable rise within her—anger, jealousy, hurt, she wasn’t even sure anymore.

Her hands itched to do something reckless. The pen in her grasp felt like a tempting projectile. But she knew better. The university had strict policies about violence. She gritted her teeth and fought the urge.

Instead, her gaze landed on the glass of water sitting on the table. Before she could second-guess herself, she reached out and nudged it with just enough force.

The glass toppled, shattering against the floor.

The sound ricocheted through the silent room, drawing startled glances. Akib immediately stood, striding toward her. This was exactly what she had wanted.

“Samantha,” he said, his voice laced with concern. “Are you okay?”

She turned her face up to him, the weight of everything she felt pressing against her ribs. She should have denied it, should have waved him off. But she was too tired of pretending.

Her voice was quiet, but her words carried a weight neither of them could ignore. “Sometimes,” she said, “you don’t realize how much someone means to you until the thought of losing them becomes unbearable.”

Akib’s breath caught. He stared at her, astonished. “Samantha—”

But she didn’t let him finish. Without another word, she turned on her heel and walked away, heading straight to the private restroom assigned to her within the library.

She locked the door behind her, leaning against it as the emotions finally overwhelmed her. She turned the faucet on, watching the water rush down the basin, her hands gripping the cold porcelain.

And then, the tears came.

Hot, silent tears that she had no control over. She wiped at them furiously, but they kept falling.

Yes, she had feelings for Akib.

Yes, she was jealous.

Yes, she was falling for him—even though he was younger, even though logic should have dictated otherwise.

But love did not obey logic. It did not consider age, reason, or convenience. Love simply was. And she, despite everything, had fallen victim to its merciless grip.

She pressed a hand to her heart, breathing heavily.

She loved him.

And, perhaps, she always had.
